Automatic athletics timing system

The system was designed to detect when an athlete's thorax crossed the finish line during an athletics competition. One camera module was placed over each of the eight lanes present on a standard athletics track. Each camera module was fitted with two cameras to increase the frame rate. The system then detects when an athlete is in range of the cameras and calculates the position of their shoulders. The distance between their shoulders and the finish line is then used to determine when they have finished. All image processing was done on the micro controller in each camera module placed over the finish line with a network link to a management interface.

Line following robot

The robot was designed to follow one of the colour lines present on an competition board. This was done as part of a third year course at the University of Pretoria. The robot was designed from first principals including the chassis and the colour sensor. The 8-bit micro controller was programmed in PIC assembly code.
